Essential industry terms and definitions for OEM/ODM backpack production

Learn the key terminology used in backpack manufacturing, from materials and production processes to quality control and logistics.

AQL (Acceptable Quality Level)

Quality Control

A statistical sampling method used in quality inspection to determine the maximum acceptable number of defective items in a batch. Common standard is AQL 2.5 for bags.

Bartack

Manufacturing

A dense, reinforced stitching pattern used at stress points on bags, such as strap attachments and handle bases, to prevent seam failure under load.

BOM (Bill of Materials)

Design

A comprehensive list of all raw materials, components, and hardware needed to manufacture a product, including quantities and specifications.

CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight)

Logistics

A shipping term where the seller covers the cost of goods, insurance, and freight charges to deliver products to the buyer's designated port.

Cordura

Materials

A brand name for a collection of high-performance fabrics known for exceptional durability, abrasion resistance, and tear strength. Widely used in premium backpacks.

Denier

Materials

A unit of measurement for the fiber thickness of individual threads used in fabric. Higher denier numbers indicate thicker, more durable fabric (e.g., 600D polyester).

EXW (Ex Works)

Logistics

A shipping term where the buyer is responsible for all transportation costs and risks from the manufacturer's facility to the final destination.

FOB (Free On Board)

Logistics

A shipping term indicating that the seller delivers goods to the port of shipment. The buyer assumes responsibility and cost once goods are loaded onto the vessel.

GRS (Global Recycled Standard)

Quality Control

An international certification that verifies recycled content in products and tracks the supply chain from recycled input to finished product.

MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)

Manufacturing

The smallest number of units a manufacturer is willing to produce in a single order. MOQ varies by product complexity and materials.

ODM (Original Design Manufacturer)

Manufacturing

A manufacturer that designs and produces products which are then rebranded by the buyer. Unlike OEM, the ODM provides both design and manufacturing services.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

Quality Control

An independent testing and certification system for textile products at all stages of production, ensuring they are free from harmful substances.

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)

Manufacturing

A company that manufactures products based on the buyer's specifications and designs. The buyer owns the brand and design, while the OEM handles production.

Pantone (PMS)

Design

A standardized color matching system used worldwide to ensure consistent color reproduction across different materials and production runs.

PP Sample (Pre-Production Sample)

Manufacturing

A sample produced before mass production begins to verify design, materials, and construction. Must be approved by the buyer before production starts.

Ripstop

Materials

A fabric weaving technique using reinforcement threads in a crosshatch pattern to prevent tears from spreading. Commonly used in outdoor and tactical backpacks.

Tech Pack

Design

A detailed technical document containing all specifications needed to manufacture a product, including dimensions, materials, colors, hardware, and construction details.

TOP Sample (Top of Production Sample)

Manufacturing

A sample pulled from the actual production line during manufacturing to verify that quality and specifications match the approved PP sample.

TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane)

Materials

A flexible, durable plastic material used for waterproof coatings, labels, and patches on backpacks. Known for its excellent abrasion and weather resistance.

YKK

Materials

The world's largest zipper manufacturer, headquartered in Japan. YKK zippers are considered the industry standard for quality and reliability in bag manufacturing.
